The Islands of Catan are on the brink of a new era. Trade routes are opening, and majestic cities are rising from the landscape. Six civilizations, each with its own vision and strategy, are battling for dominance. From the merchants of the West to the hardened warriors of the East – each empire strives to leave its mark on history.

Your Role in the Story

As a player, you lead an emerging empire starting with two villages on the same tile. You choose a civilization with unique advantages and invest in technological advancements to unlock bonuses and strategic opportunities. Technological development follows three paths: trade, building, and military strength. Each civilization can develop three technologies per path and five technologies in their primary focus, allowing them to achieve dominance. Additionally, the robber takes on a new role as a trader for certain civilizations, providing resources.

Play as the ruler of…

United Provinces

In the 17th century, the United Provinces were known as the golden capital of trade and innovation. As the provinces freed themselves from Spanish rule, an unprecedented wealth flourished. Dutch merchants dominated the seas with their impressive fleets and built trade routes that stretched from East to West. The founding of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) marked a new era in world trade.

In Rise of Civilizations, the United Provinces focus on acquiring the longest trade route and can use the robber as a trader to double resource production.

Assyria

The Assyrians, one of the oldest and most feared civilizations in the ancient world, were known for their brutal strength and unmatched military innovations. From their capital, Nineveh, they controlled the Middle East with an iron fist, elevating military technology and tactics to an art form. They were the first to implement the widespread use of iron, making their armies appear invincible. The Assyrians employed terror tactics to subdue enemies, creating a reputation that would last for centuries.

In Rise of Civilizations, Assyria focuses on gathering the greatest knight power, and thanks to their strength, they can steal two resources when playing a knight card.

Babylon

Babylon, the pearl of Mesopotamia, was a civilization known for its cultural and architectural greatness. With the Euphrates as its lifeblood, the Babylonians built an empire that embraced both scientific progress and artistic splendor. Their iconic Hanging Gardens – one of the Seven Wonders of the World – symbolized their masterful architecture and ingenuity. Under King Hammurabi, Babylon also became a center of law and governance with the first codified laws.

In Rise of Civilizations, Babylon focuses on building the greatest cities, with the construction of cities granting additional victory points.

Japan

Japan, an island nation formed by the sea and mountains, was early on a civilization that managed to find balance between nature and human creation. From wooden pagodas to the fortified castles of the Sengoku period, Japanese architecture reflected a deep respect for tradition and functionality. At the same time, innovative irrigation systems and rice farming provided a stable economy, laying the foundation for their growth.

In Rise of Civilizations, Japan focuses on rural life, with the construction of more villages granting additional victory points.

Rome

The Roman Empire, once the most powerful civilization the world has ever known, built its success on discipline, infrastructure, and military superiority. With their unrivaled legions, they expanded their empire from Britain to North Africa and the Middle East. But Rome was more than a military empire: it was a civilization of architecture, law, and culture. Thanks to their vast network of roads and ingenious fortifications, they overcame enemies and promoted trade.

In Rise of Civilizations, Rome focuses on acquiring the greatest knight power, and building cities provides free roads for the rapid expansion of the empire.

Spain

Spain, once the center of the Catholic world, began its golden age with the discovery of the New World. Under the leadership of monarchs like Ferdinand and Isabella, Spain grew into a world power. The gold and silver from Latin America flowed in, but they also brought decadence and conflict. Spanish conquistadors were known for their brutal efficiency in subjugating empires like the Aztecs and the Incas.

In Rise of Civilizations, Spain focuses on expanding its trade empire, earning additional victory points for owning a trade route of 10+ roads.
